Pretty Musings

Images Fashion Rules

Just thinking of the pretty, ladylike fashions hitting the stores and streets this Fall.  The collection from Nina Ricci is particularly lovely, don't you agree?  And handbags are my go-to, change-out Fall accessory.  Here are some beauties from Celine.   I love the fun, new take on simple, classic shapes.

And the must have tote from Celine.  Almost looks happy and smiley!  Great for those blustery Fall days.  Big enough to pack the scarf and gloves, but don't you feel oh, so stylish?!

Thought Provoking: Kichaa Wants to Keep You Thinking!

HeLa.  Ever heard the term?  How about HeLa cells?  When a friend asked me that question, the term sounded (very) vaguely familiar, but I had no idea why.  Then she couldn't stop talking up this book:  The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.  Now I have to talk it up to all of you.

HeLa cells have been critical in making some very important medical advancements.  You name it, polio, infertility, genetic mapping and cancer research are just a few.  That's great, right?  So what makes this book more than a scientific snooze?  Well, because "HeLa" is short for Henrietta Lacks.  A real person.  She was poor.  She was African-American.  And she was 31 when she died of cervical cancer in the 1950's.  But before she died, scientists became aware of the uniqueness of her cancer cells.  The cells never aged or died (critical to sustaining medical research)!  So they took some -- without her knowledge or the knowledge of her family.  Those cells are still alive and in use in petri dishes in science labs around the globe.  And the rest literally is history.

This is the human story behind the science.  Virtually everyone has been impacted by what Henrietta Lacks gave to the world (without her knowing it) and by what was taken from her (without her permission).   But not many people know about Henrietta Lacks.  Thought provoking, don't you think?  That alone should inspire you to give it a read.

Kichaa Loves Dreaming: Ohh, to be in Paris!

The weekend has got me dreaming of Paris.  Oh, how I wish I could just be transported away!  To the quaint side streets in the Marais.  The views from the street cafes.  The views from your balcony at Caron de Beaumarchais where you enjoy croissants and chocolate every morning.  The city.  The style.  The elegance.  It's all so desirable.    Don't you agree?

Il n’y a que deux endroits au monde où l’on puisse vivre heureux:  chez soi et à Paris.(There are only two places in the world where we can live happy:  at home and in Paris.)

What Makes Kichaa Smile? Tiny Peepers

So it's back to school time.  Maybe your little one is not so little anymore and back to school means he's off on his own for the first time.  Will he remember to make his bed?  Will he remember to separate his lights from his darks when he does his laundry (do you really think he'll get around to doing his laundry)?  What about a little something for his new apartment that shows you care . . . and want him to do his chores!  Or maybe you've been married to this guy for a while and want him to do his chores!  Something that says, "I love you, but don't forget to do the dishes!"  How about these awesome tea towels from Tiny Peepers?  These adorable retro designs are hand screen-printed on nice, big cotton towels.  Do you think he'll get the hint?

How about picking up a few of these for yourself while you are at it?  I'm partial to the camper towel, but I'm crazy for those vintage Airstreams!  Wouldn't they also make great party napkins for that Labor Day BBQ?   Check 'em out.  They make me smile!  What's making you smile now Kichaa?

The Bees' Knees

Image via thefashionpolice.net

My knees are an issue.  I don't mean to be negative.  In fact, that's why I am confessing.   We all have our moments!  I just have to unburden my soul and tell you that over the past few years, the oh-so-stylish mini has had me at times doubting my wardrobe and my gams!  Who needs that?   Not me.  Solution:  the midi!  It's the bees' knees for sure!  It's sexy (in my humble opinion), glamorous, elegant, not to mention more forgiving when it comes to the age and size of the fashionista wearing it.   And best of all, it's got me feeling very ladylike and much better about those knees!  I'm so glad this classic is back for Fall!

Fantastic FotogirlCreations

Loneliness by FotogirlCreations
I just have to share the absolutely stunning art photos by FotogirlCreations.   Shauna Fockler, the artist behind the camera, has an eye for catching ordinary scenes at their extraordinary best.   This busy mom captures every day moments in and around her home in Medicine Hat, Canada.  The results are charming and powerful.  I wanted to showcase just a few, but I obviously had a hard time choosing!  You will, too.   Luckily, many of her prints are also sold as cards, so you can grab yourself a whole bunch!  Kichaa, this is gorgeous stuff, so check it out!

Blonde Bombshell

Spent the day downtown yesterday and just had to check out the Blonde Bombshell.   Everyone is talking about the new Marilyn Monroe sculpture that was unveiled on Michigan Avenue last month.   She's 26 feet tall and looks very much at home smiling out over the Mag Mile.  I LOVE it!  She was a bigger than life icon, so why not a bigger than life statue!  Seems fitting to me.  The artist, Seward Johnson, has had other sculpture displayed on the Mag Mile (think "American Gothic").   The Blonde Bombshell will be flashing visitors until next Spring.  If you got it, flaunt it!  You go girl!

Relax!

Congratulations!  Made it through another week!  It's time to kick off those shoes, run the bath water (with the most fragrant and bubbly bath salts you can find), pour a glass of wine, turn on some Bach, and  turn off all those distractions in your head.  Forget about what you left unfinished on your desk or what you have to attend to Monday morning.  They are predicting a sunny, breezy, beautiful weekend!  What will you enjoy this weekend?  A good book?  A good meal?  A good conversation?  The company of a good friend?

Homage: 150 Years of Design Inspiration

Morris & Co. is celebrating 150 years of design.  I have always loved the fabulous art nouveau,  nature-inspired illustrations and textiles of William Morris.  What a visionary!  Stuffy and old-fashioned?  You be the judge.  Here are some of my favorite Morris and Morris-inspired designs.  I'm currently in a re-decorating, re-organizing, re-inventing frame of mind and I am just loving the bold colors, the scale and the little bit of vintage-quirkiness.  It's totally modern!  Not your grandma's wallpaper!  How does it inspire you?

Simple Obsessions

I love vintage style, don't get me wrong.  But I also absolutely crave simple, clean, contemporary designs.  That's why my 125 year old farmhouse is filled with the old and the new.  After visiting California last week and driving around So Cal, I started thinking (actually, obsessing) about a few things:

  • small is cozy
  • simplicity is satisfying
  • clean designs make bold statements
  • unclutter your space and you unclutter your mind
  • living simply is so much more than simply living.
So this is my latest obsession.  And if you have to obsess, like me, then why not make it a simple obsession?  What do you think?
